SHS is proud to announce the newest member of the Administration. Ms. Maria Faqier is a 9 year veteran of our campus in her former role as a science teacher. She understands the needs of our students and teachers. The ALPHA team is extremely excited to work with her in order to make SHS the best place possible.
LADY CARDINAL GOLF NEWS UPDATE
The Lady Cardinals won their latest tournament at Devine. Sophomore Summer Gonzales sunk a 20 foot putt to lead the team to their 2nd consecutive tournament win. Linda Mutz won a Bronze Medal in Individual Competition.

ATPI CONTEST RESULTS
Do you have what it takes to survive the Cropping Tool? School are limited to two students per school. Students will be given an assignment, a required element and a specific amount of time to capture 1 image. After a critique from the judges, half of the students are cropped from the group (similar to the Food Channel's Chopped cooking show).

Spanish teacher Rebecca Torres recently received an invitation to transcribe and translate lyrics of songs (“corridos”) that talk about history and how it was viewed by the Mexican American community.

CHOIR STUDENTS MAKE THEIR
FIRST RECORDING AT SHS
Southside ISD and other area districts are promoting the GO PUBLIC campaign where students are showcased to tell everyone how great public schools are. Teachers, on a daily basis, inspire students to do their best. Recently, Gallardo’s choir, under the direction of “Mr. B.”, was recorded to showcase their talent. Congratulations to Gallardo students & staff who made this happen. Also, a big thanks to the SHS Film & Video students and staff who assisted and put together the video DVD in making this event a great success!
AUTO MECHANICS NEWS
Auto mechanics students recently competed in the "Mobile Electronics Installation Contest". The following students were winners and will be representing SHS at the Skills USA contest on March 27th.

The SHS Library is now open to our community. Students, parents, and community members may now visit our SHS library and access high speed internet on our comoputers. SHS library books may be read on-site. Only district issued devices for students and staff will have Wi-Fi accessiblity on-site. No Wi-Fi is available for outside devices is possible at this time.

SHS REPRESENTED ON STOCK SHOW TRAIL RIDE
9th grade student, Gabriella Olivares, ran for queen on the 7 day trail ride for La Grande International Trail Riders. She rode from Eagle Pass Texas to San Antonio’s Stock Show and Rodeo grounds on horseback. It was a very cold week but an exciting ride. She stuck it out the whole week through rain and freezing weather.
POWERLIFTING BOYS WIN 1ST PLACE
The SHS boys powerlifting team recently won their 2nd meet in a row as a team. They won their meet with the following awards:
Juan Chapa & Kade Lopez taking 1st @ 2nd place in the 132 lb weight class,
Albert Terrazas taking 1st in the 148 lb weight class,
Alex Diaz & Sergio Zuniga taking 2nd in the 165 & 181 lb weight classes,
Quentin Lazo taking 3rd in the 198 lb weight class,
David Moyet, Gilbert Garza, & Hector Valadez taking 1st in the 220, 242, & 275 lb weight classes respectively.

SHS WELCOMES NEW FOOTBALL COACH
Mr. Ricky Lock comes from Gonzales ISD where he has been a Head Coach and Athletic Director for the past 5 years. Coach Lock has been a head coach for 18 years, with a winning record of 43-16 while at Gonzales ISD. His team was a State Quarter Finalist twice. Mr. Lock graduated from Sam Houston State University.

Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, Southside High School will be designated as an Early College High School by the Texas Education Agency.
BPA CONTEST RESULTS
The Business Professionals of America recently competed in their annual Regional Leadership Conference competition against 25 high school in San Antonion and South Texas. We had a total of 31 winners bringing home many awards. The students practiced for many hours (before school, during lunch, and after school) for many weeks leading up to the competition. The winners will now proceed to the State Leadership Conference in Houston to compete against other Regional winners.
