2012 - 2013 STUDENT COURSE REQUESTS

If you would like to view or make changes to a student’s course requests:

1.  Click on the link below to view student’s course requests. (Please follow the directions on the screen to input student demographics).

2.  Print out the student’s course request, cross out the course to be dropped and write in the course to be added.  Please don’t forget to sign the form!

3.  Turn in course request to the Counseling Department by June 7, 2012

Graduation - Friday, May 25th - 7 p.m. -  Illusions Theater at the Alamodome
Graduates must report to Alamodome no later than 5:30

BLOOD DRIVE!!

The Public Health Club of SHS will be sponsoring our 2nd blood drive this year on Thursday, May 24th in the new gym.  SHS was one of the largest schools in numbers for our last blood drive and donated well over 186 units of blood.  Please help us make this next blood drive just as successful.  If you would like to sign up to save lives and give blood, please email linda.granado@southside.k12.tx.us with a time.  We will also be taking walk-ins as well.  This time around if you donate blood, you will be receiving a free t shirt. (see image on right)


COUNSELOR RECOGNIZED
BY TEXAS A&M

SHS Counselor Charlie Gallardo was recently recognized as a 2012 Very Important Counselor by Texas A&M University. The VIC program recognizes the outstanding service and important work of high school counselors in guiding students on the path to college. Mr. Gallardo was among only 22 counselors from across the state selected for this prestigious program. This award included a two day campus visit, a recognition dinner, and a $1000 scholarship for one SHS student. In picture, Mr. Charlie Gallardo with two representatives from Texas A&M.



STUDENTS SELECTED FOR
U.T. MCCOMBS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Sophomores Kyle Garza and Gabriella Ochoa are among 50 students in Texas to have been selected to participate in the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business Summer Program. The McCombs School of Business offers current high school students the opportunity to discover business through hands-on experiences, team projects and interactions with McCombs students, faculty, staff and corporate representatives.  The McCombs High School Summer Programs are free, six-day experiences.  Student participants are housed in a campus residence hall.  Students were selected based on GPA, Letters of Recommendation, and Resume.

SHS REPRESENTED AT FIESTA

Students from dance, AFJROTC, colorguard and band represented the entire student body and staff during the "Fiesta" festivities.  In picture, the SHS AFJROTC cadets stand proudly as their instructors guide them.



SCIENCE TEACHER RECEIVES AWARD
FROM SAN ANTONIO MAYOR


Mrs. Lisa Rizo was nominated as Southside ISD’s Teacher of the Year and she was also selected to represent Southside ISD at Trinity University for the Trinity Prize for Excellence in Education.  At Trinity, Mrs. Rizo received a Tiffany's Crystal Apple signifying excellence in teaching, along with a monetary award given to 20 distinguished area educators. The City of San Antonio, Texas, and Mayor Julian Castro awarded Mrs. Rizo with a certificate.  Click "Read More" to read the certificate.

Then join us for the following Saturday SAT prep sessions:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that try to have a measurable impact on youth.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is one of the oldest and largest youth mentoring organizations in the United States. Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors children,all ages in communities across the country.

SENIOR SELECTED TO 2012
ALLSTAR BASKETBALL GAME


Luis Alaniz, SHS senior, was selected to participate in the 2012 San Antonio Lone Star All Star basketball game. The event is sponsored by the Lone Star Invitational Sport Foundation, Inc. and features some of the top senior basketball players in San Antonio. Luis finished second among all scorers in District 29-4A this season and earned 2nd team all district honors.



TEACHER OF THE YEAR
MS. LISA RIZO

Southside ISD announced its District-Wide Teacher of the Year, Southside High School teacher Lisa Rizo.  Ms. Rizo is a Science teacher who has impacted the lives of many students that have gone through her classes since she started teaching at Southside High School in 2005.

Mrs. Rizo stated, “My passion for people and fascination with the human body, sparked me to pursue a career in medicine.”  She also said, “My love for people started at a young age.  I love to help others, no matter what the cause is.”  Her love for Science and students reflects in her everyday teaching.  Mrs. Rizo is a dynamic teacher and was selected by her own peers to represent them.



CARDINALS BOYS TEAM WIN
GOLF DISTRICT TITLE

The Southside Cardinal Golf Team led by sophomore Jesse Esparza won a hard fought match to win the district golf championship. Esparza’s second day score of 79 sealed the 11th district title for the Cardinals. The Cardinals had a six stroke lead over Burbank at the end of the first round at Riverside G.C. and finished with a four stroke victory over a charging team from Edison H.S. at Willow Springs. Esparza took third place in individual competition.  According to Coach Rodriguez, this was a very impressive victory for his very young and inexperienced cardinal team with no seniors or juniors in the lineup.

BUILDING TRADES NEWS!

SHS building trades students competed in the Texas
Technology Student Association Competition.  The competition was held in Waco, Texas from April 1st - 3rd.  David Wilkins placed 5th in Computer Graphics.  In Woodworking, Edward Arredondo placed 2nd on his Wooden Rocker Bench.  Daniel Sanchez and Christopher Hixson placed 2nd on their Wooden Bench. Congratulation to the winning students and their Building Trades teacher (Ms. Mendietta). 


LADY CARDINAL GOLF TEAM
WINS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

The Southside Lady Cardinal Golf Team won the District 29-4A title with a convincing win over other district teams. The Lady Cardinals were led by junior Lindsey Garcia with a two day total of 166 at Riverside G.C. The Lady Cardinals opened up a big lead and coasted to their 13th district title.  District medalist honors went to Lady Cardinal Lindsey Garcia. Iisha Tarin was awarded the bronze medal. This was Coach Enrique Rodriguez 23rd and 24th district titles.

SHS SENIOR EARNS
ATHLETIC STATE RECOGNITION

SHS student athletic trainer, Sara Ramon, was honored by the Texas State Athletic Trainers' Association as Academic All-State. Sara was selected based on her dedication as a Student Athletic Trainer at Southside, combined with the fact that she maintained above a 92 overall average in all of her classes from the start of her freshman year through the first six weeks of her senior year. She has been an athletic trainer at Southside High School since her freshman year.  Sara is a dedicated student and athlete.  She recently won Weight Lifting titles. 



SOUTHSIDE VIRTUAL ACADEMY 
FUTURE GRADUATES

The following students have earned on-line computer course credits through E2020 at an accelerated pace.  These students recovered credit and have continued earning credit and are looking forward to graduating with the Class of 2012.  Their discipline and dedication to attending class and taking on-line courses has been key to their successSAVE, Southside Academy of Virtual Education, is currently taking applications for summer courses and for the 2012-2013 school year.

ROTC IN 5K WARRIOR CHALLENGE

Sixteen cadets competed with 6 other schools that fielded 19 teams in a 5k Warrior Challenge. The events also included push, pull-ups, sit-ups and a tug of war contest. Our cadets all worked amazingly hard and gave everything they had. Their efforts were rewarded in both the thrill of competition and our Women’s 5k group (Shadia Plouch, Blasita Trevino, Iisha Tarin, Mary Jimenez) taking the 2nd place trophy overall and Chris Huerta winning the individual pull-up challenge with 18 regulation pull-ups. This is ROTC's first trophy since 2006 and we are so proud of our cadets attitude and commitment to every event they attend.

BUILDING TRADES CLUB
CONTEST RESULTS

Recently, the Building Trades Club competed in the Region 20 Alamo Technology Educators Association regional contest at Reagan High School.

The competition was a success with the following students winning in their particular events:
  • Michael Sorrow and Devin Gomez, 1st place, Podium Team building project
  • Devin Gomez, 1st place, Podium project (individual)
  • Daniel Sanchez, 1st place, Wood Bench project
  • Daniel Arredondo, 2nd place, Wood Bench project
  • David Wilkins, 2nd place, Computer Graphics contest
  • Christopher Hixon, 2nd place, Dog House project (individual)

Congratulation to the club and their sponsor and Building Trades teacher, Ms. Mary Mendietta.


JUNIOR CHRISTOPHER MENDEZ
WINS 2ND PLACE

Junior Christopher Mendez recently represented SHS and showed his Cardinal pride at a camp in Winter Park, Colorado.  Mendez suffers from a rare skin disorder, Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), but that does not stop him from competing at the national level.  The purpose of the camp is to meet and network with children that have similar or other health challenges.  Chris earned a 2nd place medal in “Sit Skiing”.  He proudly wears his medal around his neck and plans to return to the four day camp next year in hopes for a first place title.

BPA STATE LEADERSHIP 
CONFERENCE RESULTS 

Members of Southside HS Business Professionals of America (BPA) joined over 2,500 other conference delegates from across the state to participate in state level business skill competitions, general sessions, and the state officer candidate campaigns and elections.  
On the last day, the delegation from SHS spent the morning at the 6th Floor Museum (formerly Texas School Book Depository) to learn about JFK’s legacy and his last days.   

Later that afternoon, students ended the conference at the BPA 2012 State Leadership Conference Awards Ceremony.  Mr. Dreiss, Ms. Brandes, Mrs. Martha Garcia, and all BPA members were excited when senior, Victoria Villa was announced as top 5 in the state, qualifying to compete at BPA 2012 National Conference in Chicago, Illinois!  “Tori” will be competing in Legal Office Procedures against 50 of the nation’s top competitors in this event.


ENGINEERING SUMMER CAMP INFORMATION


The Cockrell School of Engineering is offering a FREE summer  camp for current 10th & 11th grade students.
 


The camp is My Introduction to Engineering (MITE)
Summer Camp.  Outstanding African-American, Hispanic and Native American students, as well as those who have overcome any social or economic hardship, are strongly encouraged to apply.  MITE is open to high school sophomores or juniors.
 
MITE is a free, five-day residential camp that offers students the opportunity to discover engineering through hands-on projects and interactions with engineering students, faculty, staff and alumni.  Fifty students will be selected to attend each session.
 
Session I: June 3 - 8, 2012
Session II: June 10 - 15, 2012
Application DEADLINE:  April 2, 2012
