MIGHTY CARDINAL BAND STUDENT
BRINGS 1ST PLACE IN COMPETITION
Four Mighty Cardinal Band
members traveled to Austin to compete in State Solo and Ensemble
contest. To qualify for this contest, students had to earn top ratings
on memorized “Class 1” solos at the district level. Seniors William
Rodriguez and Mikayla Skoog earned silver medals for their “Excellent”
ratings, and senior Chris Skoog earned a gold medal for his “Superior”
rating. This is the first known occurrence of a Southside student
earning a “1” at State contest. Congratulations to these students and
their band directors!

READY, SET, TEACH STUDENTS GETTING READY
TO BECOME FUTURE TEACHERS
Ready, Set, Teach is a program designed to give
students the opportunity to take classes that give them the experience
if teaching is the career path they decide to follow. SHS teacher, Mrs.
Lee, works with Pearce Primary so that the students can attend 3 days out
of the week for about 2-3 hours and work in classrooms with teachers and
students to experience what it is like to teach in a school
environment. The high school students do a great job at Pearce. They
also help in PTO events doing community service. Pearce PTO had a
luncheon to thank the students for all of their hard work this school
JROTC HONORED BY U.S. AIR FORCE
Near the end of each school year, the Air Force selects a small number
of JROTC units to be for awards. This year, the JROTC students at Southside HS have been awarded the Distinguished Unit Award by Headquarters.
In the next couple of weeks, the Air Force will send a letter to SISD’s
Superintendent and school board as recognition for this elite award. The cadets
have worked hard this year through fundraising, doing community service
hours, and by exceeding other goals set at the beginning of the school
year. In recognition, each student in JROTC will receive an additional
