STUDENT COUNCIL
GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

Over 30 Student Council students volunteered 4 hours at the Respite Center adding hundreds of hours of group volunteer time. The Respite Care Center is a state licensed child placement agency providing shelter to children with developmental disabilities who have been removed from their home as a result of abuse and neglect.  SHS students spent time learning about how this non-profit organization is run and funded and challenges the center faces. Students helped clean up some of the facilities where children are cared for, and students also had the pleasure of spending time with some of the very special children who are currently living at the Respite Center.

NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY!

Did you know heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women?
Did you know heart disease claims the lives of more than 422,000 women each year?

The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® movement works every day to fund research and fight this killer so more women can be saved. But they need our help. Please celebrate National Wear Red Day® on Friday, February 3, to raise awareness about heart disease among women and to raise funds to ensure the research that could save a woman’s life never has to be denied.

MARINES VISIT THEIR ALMA MATER

Lance Cpl. Andrew Garza and PFC John D. Cruz, Southside HS graduates from the class of 2010, stopped by to visit with Discipline Alternative Education Program students.  The Marines spent time talking with students about honor, courage and commitment.  Students paid close attention as the 2 Marines shared stories from their experience while in training in the military.  LCpl. Garza told the students, "The world is a lot bigger than you think."  He said, "You can always change, and it's never too late to succeed and accomplish great things."  PFC Cruz said, "Always stay on a straight path."  Both Marines are in active reserves.  LCpl. Garza is stationed in Corpus and PFC Cruz in San Antonio.

Recently, numerous Southside HS students auditioned for the Texas Music Educators Association Region Honor Band.  Three students were selected to be a part of the group: Victor Guajardo (tuba), Joseph Trevino (tenor saxophone), and Adrian Esquivel (clarinet).  Joseph and Adrian placed 1st and 4th in their sections, respectively, and both were chosen to go on and audition for the All-State Honor Band. Both placed very well in the Area competition.  The competition includes Texas regions 11, 12, 18, and 27.  Joseph placed 2nd of 4, and Adrian 8th of 24.  Band instructors William Ricketts and Michael Misko congratulated these students for their excellent performance.

BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS OF AMERICA
GIVE BACK TO COMMUNITIES

For 12 years in a row, members of the Southside HS BPA chapter have worked with United Way participating in community service projects. Their environmental beach clean ups have taken them from cleaning beaches in Corpus Christi beaches to Texas A&M on a college visit. Participating at the annual Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner has kept them involved with turkey prep, decorating tables, and creating centerpieces. Recently for the holiday season, BPA is gathering food items to put together dinner baskets for families in the battered women and children centers in San Antonio. This group is hoping to bring holiday cheer to over 50 families.

SENIOR TALENTED IN MUSIC AND ACADEMICS

Travis Guerra, Southside High School senior, is not only talented in music, but also in academics.  Guerra is a dynamic trumpet player for Southside High School's band and Mariachi group, and this year he was acknowledged by the National Hispanic Recognition Program.  Each year, the National Hispanic Recognition Program identifies nearly 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from across the United States and U.S. territories who take the PSAT in October of their junior year and designate themselves as Hispanic/Latino.  These students need to receive a high qualifying score to have the honor of being named National Hispanic Merit Scholars.
