Super Saturday New Teacher Survival Guide
As part of our teacher support and growth at South
Side High School, we offer an ongoing series of Super Saturday Professional Developments designed to address issues, concerns and other educational planning questions that arise throughout the year.

Survival 101” was the theme of our 1st training.  New teachers, and new teachers to SHS, were provided with relevant and helpful information, as well as tips and supports designed to make their time at Southside productive and impactfull!  Teachers received guidance and practiced hands-on activities centering on Classroom Management, Conducting Parent Conferences, Data-Driven Decision Making (What Gradebook and Eduphoria Can Do For You!) and other important teaching essentials.  Most importantly, it gave new teachers a moment to reflect on their craft and build skills to support success in their classrooms!

Diez y Seis de Septiembre

September 16th, or Diez y Seis de Septeimbre as it is more commonly known, is Mexican Independence Day.  Students in Ms. Rebecca Torres's Pre-AP Spanish class commemorated the Mexican holiday with presentations that included reports on regional foods, customs and culture.  To the left is a group picture of Ms. Torres's class as they gather in a hall where they displayed their work.

Toyota Partners with Southside High School
North Park Toyota of San Antonio and the Gulf States Toyota held a meet and greet event today for the Gulf States Toyota Technical Education and Workforce Development Initiative along with the partner high schools selected for this pilot program. SHS was one of two schools in the local area selected for this Automotive Technology initiative where a local Toyota Dealer, the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas Plant (TMMTX) and the Gulf States Toyota Dealers partner together with SISD to aid in the efforts of helping to educate “Tomorrow’s Toyota Technician”.

This partnership will help local schools and students achieve the certifications and experience necessary to thrive
in tomorrow’s competitive job market.  North Park Toyota Parts & Service Director, Baldemar Perez, made the first offer of employment to a SHS Senior, Jose Andres Vasquez, as an entry level technician in the North Park Toyota Apprentice Training program. Mr. Vasquez will be one of the students who will be added to the service department to help North Park Toyota Technicians deliver top-tier maintenance and deliver on the promise of high quality customer service.  Way to go Cardinal!

An Art Education in Mandalas

Southside High School's award winning artist and Art Teacher, Ms. Kathy O’Rourke, presents a wide variety of mediums and art forms for her Art students to consider and work with throughout the year.  This past week Ms. O'Rourke taught on Mandalas and writes:
“I introduced the lesson [on Mandalas] as an ancient form of spirituality from India and Tibet.  Mandala means circle, but the mandala itself represents the universe and all it might contain. Buddhist monks make these today out of colored sand. The designs are rather intricate and can represent a lot of things. After they are finished, to emphasize the impermanence of all things, they destroy it. These are mandalas that [students] designed and painted.”
