RED RIBBON WEEK: October 27th - 31st
The red ribbon was adopted as a symbol of the movement in honor of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, an agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration who was kidnapped and killed while investigating drug traffickers.  This campaign has reached millions of children and has been recognized by the U.S. Congress.  Red Ribbon Week is a time designated to reflect on the progress made and to actively promote a “Drug Free Life”. It is a time when parents, community, schools, and law enforcement collaborate to keep our youth SAFE & DRUG FREE.

You can find Southside High School's Red Ribbon Week activities outlined here.

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in and complete a degree at four-year colleges, focusing on students in the academic middle.  Southside High School is proud to be in its second year of A.V.I.D.

SAT/PSAT School Wide Day A Success
Southside High School is proud to be one of the few high schools in San Antonio to have conducted a school-wide SAT/PSAT for all our students this past week.  Our Principal, Mr. Hector Esquivel, explains that we do PSAT/SAT School Day for some of the following reasons:

1)  PSAT determines National Hispanic Merit Scholars - We are proud to have had two
     graduate from SHS last year!

2)  PSAT helps identify potential AP students who have been overlooked - Our
      "Diamonds in the Rough"

3)  PSAT serves as a practice for the real SAT test.

4)  PSAT/SAT promote college readiness on our campus.

5)  SAT gives all students an opportunity to take the test instead of only those who
      show up on a Saturday.

6)  PSAT/SAT will expose our students to similar higher order thinking questions as
      End of Course Exams.

We are proud to be one of few high schools in San Antonio to give this opportunity to our students!

Cardinals of the Week: 1st Six Weeks All "A" Honor Roll
Every week Southside recognizes students who represent the best of our school and community by celebrating their excellence; whether their impact or accomplishments occur inside or outside of the classroom.  This week we recognize the 27 Cardinals who made the All "A" Honor Roll for the 1st Six Weeks. We congratulate all these students for their hard work.  We thank their parents for supporting them through long days and late nights.  We are extremely proud that we can partner with them in their child's education.  Go Cardinals!!!

NEW SHS Tardy Policy
Parents and Students, in order to better help underscore the importance of being in class to receive the maximum instruction possible, the NEW Southside High School Tardy Policy is as follows:

7 Tardies=  ½ Day PASS with a call home to parents
11 Tardies= 1 Day PASS with a call home to parents
12+ Tardies= 2 Days PASS, call home to parents, student placed on Campus Behavioral Contract
In an effort to help students adjust to this new Tardy Policy, teachers and staff are aware that tardies have to be excessive and blatant and not a result of students actually trying to make it to class.  Also, we ask staff to be aware of when these tardies are occurring so we may focus on supporting students who may be having the most challenges with making it to class on time.

Please feel free to contact SHS at any time should you have any questions, 210-882-1606

Express News Defensive Player of the Week 10/11/14

Johnny Herrera, Southside: Freshman, safety — Returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown and was part of a defense that limited Somerset to its lowest scoring output in a 17-14 win. Somerset had scored at least 40 points in its previous four games.

Read more about the Cardinals season here, in the Express News article titled, "
Southside turns the corner," by David Hinojosa.  Go Cardinals!!!

"Southside Gets Past Somerset, Stays Perfect"
SAN ANTONIO — SOMERSET — Southside may have been off to its best start in program history, but the Cardinals were the decided underdog entering Friday's District 29-5A showdown against Somerset. Playing without the services starting quarterback Jonny Trevino, who was out with a leg injury, Southside trotted out senior Brandon Herrera in his place. Herrera, the Cardinals' starting cornerback, hadn't played quarterback except for a few series during some scrimmages last season. Herrera wasn't flashy, but he was effective. And thanks to a tough defense, which came up with two huge stops, the Cardinals pulled out a 17-14 victory with junior Zach Henry's 26-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining the fourth quarter before a packed house of 5,000 at Bulldog Stadium.

Note: From the San Antonio Express News, Congratulations Cardinals!!!!

Coach Vincent Nominated for Football Award
     Anyone Can Vote; See below!

We are proud to announce that Varsity Football Defensive Coordinator Coach Charles Vincent has been nominated for the Built by Nature Assistant Coach of the Week award, presented by Dairy Max and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.  Texas Football.com lists Coach Vincent as being nominated because:

After going 1-9 a year ago, Southside is now 4-0 this year following their 34-7 win last Friday against Eagle Pass Winn. The Cardinal defense is a major driving force behind the turnaround, having dominated all season with six sacks, three interceptions and four fumble recoveries.

Coach Vincent is one of five nominees for the weekly statewide award, which is 100% decided by fan voting.  The recipe for success, we’ve found, is schools that util
ize social media to spread the word to their students, faculty, staff, coaches, parents and anyone that supports their team and community.

Voting will be conducted via Twitter

Here are links announcing nominees along with instruction for voting:

An Art Education in Mandalas

Southside High School's award winning artist and Art Teacher, Ms. Kathy O’Rourke, presents a wide variety of mediums and art forms for her Art students to consider and work with throughout the year.  This past week Ms. O'Rourke taught on Mandalas and writes:
“I introduced the lesson [on Mandalas] as an ancient form of spirituality from India and Tibet.  Mandala means circle, but the mandala itself represents the universe and all it might contain. Buddhist monks make these today out of colored sand. The designs are rather intricate and can represent a lot of things. After they are finished, to emphasize the impermanence of all things, they destroy it. These are mandalas that [students] designed and painted.”
