WOAI NEWS ON CAMPUS
Jacqueline Ortiz from News 4 WOAI was here to do a story on bullying and interviewed students from the organization Stand for the Silent, sponsored by Mr. Rudy Ramirez. Jacqueline is a former SHS graduate and was highly impressed with our students and their views on bullying.
The faculty and staff at Southside High School will support and promote our school motto, "SHS equals Student Success." It is therefore our responsibility to work collaboratively to prepare students academically, socially, and technologically as they become contributing members of society.
SHS STUDENTS VOLUNTEER HELP FOR
RAUL JIMENEZ THANKSGIVING DINNER
Students from the BPA (Business Professionals of America) and Environmental Clubs spent several hours during their break to decorate the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center for the 34th Annual Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner. According to event organizers, “This event continues to provide senior citizens and less fortunate a place to enjoy a hot and nutritious turkey dinner with all the trimmings on Thanksgiving Day.” Also, “The event invites seniors to dine at a community dinner table, celebrate the holiday with their peers, as they enjoy live music and entertainment."

A WEEKEND OF RAGTIME MUSIC!!
SHS students Mark Gonzalez, Chris Skoog, William Rodriquez and John Pesina participated in the San Antonio Ragtime piano competition. This was the first time students from Southside participated in this event. The Southside sax ensemble; Ryan Erfurth, Jesse Howton, and John Pesina performed ragtime selections at the Radius Center located downtown as guest performers during the Ragtime Festival concert. Congratulations to these students for their hard work.
BAND STUDENTS SELECTED FOR HONORS ENSEMBLE
Recently, SHS had 12 students selected to perform regularly with the San Antonio Youth Wind Ensemble. Students auditioned for the right to be a part of this local honors group, competing against other high school and college students from the San Antonio area. Congratulations to the band students.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CLASS NEWS
The Advanced Placement Environmental Science students were given a lesson Friday, November 15 in Birding by birders Tom and Patsy from Mitchell Lake Audubon Center. Also a guest speaker at the event was Herbert Byaruhanga from Uganda, the Managing Director of Bird Uganda Safarais Ltd. Students learned how to identify birds using C.H.E.S.S. – color, habitat, ecoregion, silhouette, and sound. This lesson is part of the unit of Biodiversity and these students will now become citizen scientists at Mitchell Lake and begin using their birding skills to survey birds. The data that is collected will then become part of Cornell University’s database for scientists around the world to use.
SHS BAND INVITED TO BATTLE OF FLOWERS PARADE!!
The Battle of Flowers® Association and the Band Festival Executive Committee has chosen the SHS band to be one of the feature bands at this year’s 76th Band Festival. Only 3 high school bands were chosen and the SHS band stood out as one of the best!
SHS WINS BIG AT AREA 20 BOWLING COMPETITION
A spirited group of 36 Southside ISD students represented our school and district at the Special Olympics Area 20 Bowling Competition. The event was highlighted by Southside students bringing home 12 gold medals and 7 silver medals. Weeks of dedication and practice led to their success. These students now begin to focus on the next event -- the Basketball Individual Skills competition.
NATIONAL HONOR STUDENTS RECOGNIZED

The National Honor Society held its Annual Induction Ceremony on Nov. 6th. The theme for this year’s ceremony was, “Celebrating 60 years of Community Service.” The NHS chapter was established in 1953 and since then, it has been the commitment of this organization to give back in community service. Special Guest speakers, included Interim Superintendent, Ricardo Vela, Southside High School’s Principal, Hector Esquivel, and SHS 2008 Valedictorian Sarah Castillo. It was an evening of celebration as students were honored for their high achievement in leadership, scholar, community service, and scholarship.
MUSIC STUDENTS AWARDED YET MORE GRANT MONEY!
Members of the jazz band were recently selected to receive $300 in grant money from the Texas Jazz Educator’s Association, to be used towards future music purchases. Congratulations to these students for this great accomplishment!
POLICE EXPLORERS RECOGNIZED
DURING REGULAR BOARD MEETING
On Saturday, October 19 the Southside ISD Police Explorers competed in the 6th Annual Alamo Area Law Enforcement Explorer Competition. With over 90 teams from every corner of the state, this is the largest Explorer competition in the state of Texas. The Explorers were recognized during a regular school Board meeting.

AFJROTC CADETS WELCOME CONGRESSMAN
Congressman Pete Gallego visited the AFJROTC Cadets on Thursday, November 7. Leader Cadets welcomed the Congressman, Board Trustee Alma Guzman, parents, Interim Superintendent and district staff. A tour was provided by the Cadets and a Mission Briefing was given by the Cadet Corps Commander and Deputy Commander. School officials and parents listened as cadets presented information on the functionality of the AFJROTC at SHS. The Cadet presentation ended with a performance demo from the drill team. BOYS CARDINAL GOLF TEAM NEWS
The Southside Cardinal TEAM RED led by Obed Alvarado's score of 75 took First Place at the Stevens High School Invitational held at Devine G.C. Alvarado also took top medalist honors!!
Ryan Erfurth led TEAM BLACK to a Third Place Finish with a score of 81. Erfurth also captured third place in the Medalist Division.
GOLF TOURNAMENT RESULTS
Congratulation to Sophomore Alyssa Garza on winning 1st place in the Medalist Division at the Brennan Invitational held at Riverside Golf Course.
Congratulation to the Lady Cardinal Team Red who won 2nd place at the Steele Invitational held at Northcliffe Golf Course.
